Speak Up Prevention Coalition Minutes

March 7, 2013

Upcoming Events:

v  Generation Rx, Lake Forest Place

v  Dr. Aaron White, Program Director of Underage and College Drinking Prevention Research at the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism

High School Happenings

v  Students Aware and Dedicated (SADD) – sticker shock campaign is good for bonding the group, 50 people walked in Out of Darkness Walk, new UR Beautiful Campaign at LFHS, safe prom, 15- 18 students participate in SADD, Lisa Huffman is the leader

v  Y2Y- 2 youth that attended last year’s Y2Y meeting in Rhode Island reported on their experience, at last year’s conference the youth learned ways to solve life problems with positive means, conference provided an opportunity for youth to connect with others who have similar values, students were paired with other youth from other schools, each day started with a speaker, in the evenings there were activities such as: talent show, dance, athletic night, students were assigned to family groups who did activities together, youth from the same school were split up, conference emphasized positive reasons to not do drugs or alcohol – there is a great life ahead with fun friends, LFHS youth want to get more youth attending the conference so they can create a movement at LFHS, ideally LFHS students want to get safe, healthy activities happening, one idea is Fan buses to way sport events,  new CROYA staff member, Kristen, will help get activities going

v  Social Norm Campaign, focusing on healthy choices messages this year

v  Student Focus Groups

Behind the Orange Curtain (BOC)

v  Discussed showing the moving during lunch at LFHS during Red Ribbon Week

v  Would teachers offer credit to students who watched

v  Speak UP could host a family movie night for DPM

v  Include the telecommunications department and executive producer Jamieson

v  Maybe ReGroup could use BOC

v  Illinois is currently working on amending Good Samaritan law so individuals can call for help and not be prosecuted as an accessory to the crime

Listening Sessions Update

v  Reported on number and demographics of participates:  LF – 29, LB 17 and Knollwood 7

v  Receive summary, local conditions and recommended evidence based practices from CSG

v  Present conclusions and recommendations at April meeting

v  Plan next steps
